Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin began on Weller Street in Springfield, MO, when Will Knauer and Philip Dickey began writing songs together in Will’s attic.
Since forming around 2000, the indie-pop darlings have gained a worldwide fanbase, and have received praise from the most cynical of music critics including Pitchfork and Spin Magazine.
After releasing their critically-acclaimed album “Broom,” which they recorded with a hodgepodge pile of random recording equipment, the band found themselves in nationwide publications, and even had their song “Oregon Girl” on The OC.
Although they have gained a lot of great success, I still remember them as the soft-spoken band trying to pull crowds in Springfield.
I remember going to the Ozark Empire Fair one summer evening to see SSLYBL play, and being joined by only three random people in the crowd. My friends and I would always be perplexed that the band couldn’t draw very well. Even then, most of the bands in our circle realized that SSLYBL had the best songs in town. I don’t think the Springfield scene had quite caught up to what SSLYBL were doing at the time.
I’m happy to say that people far more influential than me, eventually noticed the incredible songs coming out of that Weller Street attic.
Currently, the band is recording with Chris Walla of Death Cab for Cutie, and should be putting out a new album very soon.
