If you are a music fan, chances are that you have already heard of Mute Math.  The Grammy-nominated band has garnered praise from critics and fans alike, and has been hailed as one of the greatest live music acts in the world. If you threw the experimentation of Radiohead, the overall vibe of the Police, a few old electronics, and one of the best young drummers in rock music into a blender, you would end up with a liquid full of trite metaphors.  Unfortunately, this is the only way I can describe Mute Math’s sound.

Mute Math hails from New Orleans, but 3/4 of the members have strong ties to the Springfield area.  Paul Meany (keys/vocals) lived in Springfield very briefly, where he met Darren King (drums).  Darren grew up in the Springfield area and played in a few local bands.  Paul and Darren would eventually trade demos back and forth a number of years later, and Mute Math would begin to form.  When Paul and Darren decided to officially form Mute Math, they called on their friend Greg Hill to play guitar. Greg went to school with me at Republic High school.  You can read more about Republic and another band that has ties to the school here.

Another great Springfield musician, Jeremy Larson, wrote and recorded string parts for the newest Mute Math album called Armistice.   You can read more about Jeremy Larson here.

If you’d like to learn more about Mute Math, check out their website, or just Google “Mute Math.”

Below is the ground-breaking video for “Typical.”  I had the privilege of hearing about this video a few weeks before they went in to shoot it.
